The Marine Industry has slowly embraced emission regulations to reduce harmful SOx emissions. New restrictions went into effect from January 1, 2020, further reducing the sulfur limit to 0.50% globally in fuel oils onboard ships. Vessels are subject to existing restrictions of 0.10% sulfur content in designated Emission Control Areas (ECA).
Ships have 3 options to meet the emission requirements. They can either use compliant low sulfur fuel, switch to alternate fuel such as LNG, or install an exhaust gas scrubber. The cost of low sulfur fuel is significantly higher than high sulfur fuel. In contrast, the initial investment for alternative fuels such as LNG is extremely high, leaving exhaust gas scrubbers as the only cost-effective and compliant option.
Exhaust gas scrubber installation can help ships meet the emission requirements while providing cost benefits for the owners. The ROI of exhaust gas scrubbers can be seen as soon as 18 months.
