It is apparent that not only are the prices of bunker fuel going up and down, but the quality is also experiencing huge volatility. Famous maritime insurer Gard P&I has seen a 50% increase in the bunker related claims in 2026.
These claims have come from fuels bunkered in Singapore, Houston and ARA predominantly and VLSFO fuels accounted for 85% of all bunker quality claims.
Viswa received 179 reports of serious machinery problems caused by bunker fuels in 2026 and of these, 136 were caused by VLSFO fuels.
The majority of these had a normal ISO 8217 test slate. It is possible for you to protect yourself against problems and damage arising out of bunker fuel.
